Gecko Spare Parts: An Overview of Control Systems and Compatibility

Gecko is, alongside Balboa, one of the two most widespread manufacturers of hot tub control systems you’ll commonly encounter in Europe. If your hot tub doesn’t have its own electronics brand shown on the display or in the documentation, there’s a good chance a Gecko board is inside — it supplies components to a large number of hot tub manufacturers under their own name.

What “control system” actually means

A control system isn’t a single part, but an assembly of several components usually replaced independently, depending on what specifically has failed:

  • Control board (power unit) — the brain of the whole system, controlling pumps, heating, and lighting based on commands from the panel.
  • Control panel — the display and buttons used to operate the hot tub, connected to the board by a cable.
  • Temperature and flow sensors — sense water temperature and flow; a fault shows up as a specific error code on the display.
  • Heating module — part of the board on some lines, a separate component on others.

How to tell if you have a Gecko system

The most reliable way is a label directly on the board or on the control box cover inside the hot tub (behind the service door) — it shows the manufacturer, type designation, and usually a version too. If the label is missing or unreadable, the characteristic look of the control panel and the menu shown on the display can help, which an experienced service technician or spare-parts supplier can recognise from a photo.

Compatibility across generations

Over the years, control system manufacturers develop new board generations that aren’t necessarily physically or software-compatible with older models — a different connector, different terminal layout, or different communication with the panel. When ordering a replacement board, always give the exact type designation from the label, not just “Gecko” in general, and ideally the approximate age of the hot tub too. For older, long-discontinued types, the solution is either sourcing a compatible successor board from the manufacturer, or a retrofit to a currently available system (see the article on control unit retrofits).

FAQ

Is Gecko worse or better than Balboa?

Both companies are established, widely used manufacturers with a long track record. The choice between them for a new hot tub usually isn’t up to the customer — what matters more is that it’s a standard, well-supported system, not unknown proprietary electronics.

Can a panel from one manufacturer be used with a board from another?

No, the panel and board communicate via a proprietary protocol specific to that manufacturer and aren’t interchangeable across brands.

Where can I find a list of error codes for Gecko?

Error codes vary by the specific board generation — the most reliable source is documentation for that model, or asking a spare-parts supplier with the type designation.

Replacement control system parts are in the pool technology category. More articles on service and spare parts are in the Guides section.
