Foam and Odor in a Hot Tub: 6 Causes and How to Remove Them

Foam on the surface and an unpleasant smell are the two most common signs that your hot tub water needs attention — and they are almost never a fault of the hot tub itself. In the vast majority of cases, the culprits are cosmetics, residual laundry detergent, neglected water chemistry, or simply old water. The good news: each of the six typical causes can be reliably removed, and most of them can be prevented altogether.

Why Does a Hot Tub Foam? 6 Most Common Causes

Foam forms when three ingredients come together in the water: water itself, air from the jets, and so-called surfactants — substances that reduce surface tension. You can’t get rid of the air in a hot tub, but you can get rid of the surfactants. Where do they come from?

1. Cosmetics: Creams, Deodorants, Hair Products

Sunscreen, body lotion, make-up, shampoo, and hair spray all wash off the skin and hair into the water. In the 200 to 1,500 liters of water in a hot tub heated to 36–38 °C, these substances concentrate much faster than in a pool holding dozens of cubic meters. Just two or three soaks “without a shower” can noticeably load the water.

2. Laundry Detergent and Fabric Softener from Swimwear

Swimwear washed in regular laundry detergent carries residues of detergent and fabric softener in its fibers — precisely the surfactants that are deliberately added to laundry powder so it foams. As soon as the swimwear enters the jet stream, the residue rinses out into the water. This is by far the most common cause of sudden, thick white foam.

3. Body Oils and Dead Skin

Even without cosmetics, every bather releases sweat, sebum, and dead skin cells into the water. This organic load doesn’t foam much on its own, but it consumes sanitizer, feeds microorganisms, and, combined with cosmetics, forms an oily film that stabilizes foam.

4. Low Water Hardness (Too Little Calcium)

Water that’s too soft — hardness below roughly 150 ppm CaCO₃ — has lower surface tension and foams more readily. This typically affects hot tubs filled with softened water from a home water softener or with very soft well water. The solution is to raise hardness with a calcium chloride-based product to the recommended 150–250 ppm.

5. Old Water with High TDS

TDS (total dissolved solids) is the sum of everything that has accumulated in the water over months of use: chemical residues, minerals, organic matter. The higher the TDS, the worse the sanitizer performs and the more readily the water foams — it is simply “oversaturated.” Once TDS exceeds the fill-water value by roughly 1,500 ppm, no product can save the water anymore.

6. Cheap Chemicals and Defoamers That Only Mask the Problem

Low-quality chemicals containing fillers can themselves contribute to foaming. And watch out for defoamers: they work instantly, but the effect typically lasts only up to 24 hours and doesn’t address the cause at all — the surfactants remain in the water. A defoamer is first aid before guests arrive, not maintenance. Anyone who “deals with” foam for weeks using only a defoamer is merely postponing a water change and making the TDS worse.

Diagnostics: Symptom → Cause → Solution

Before reaching for any product, work out exactly what the water is doing. The table covers the most common combinations of foam and odor:

Water “Smells Like Chlorine”? What You’re Actually Smelling Is Chloramines

A widespread misconception: a sharp smell means there’s too much chlorine in the water. The opposite is true. When free chlorine reacts with sweat, urea, and cosmetics, chloramines (combined chlorine) form — and it’s precisely these that sting the eyes and smell “of chlorine.” Fresh free chlorine at the correct concentration of 1–3 ppm is practically odorless.

What’s more, chloramines disinfect only minimally. So the smell actually signals that there is too little active chlorine in the water, and the chlorine that has been used up needs to be “burned off.” The solution is shock sanitizing: a one-off high dose of an oxidizing product (chlorine shock, or a chlorine-free MPS-based oxidizer) that breaks down combined chlorine. Shock the water in the evening, with the air blower off and the cover open, so the chloramines can escape from the water — under a closed thermal cover they would condense back into it. Musty or Moldy Smell: Biofilm Living in the Plumbing

If the water smells musty, moldy, or like rotten eggs, don’t look for the culprit at the surface — look in the plumbing. Over time, biofilm forms on the inner walls of the hoses and jets — a slimy layer of bacteria wrapped in a protective film that a normal sanitizer dose can’t penetrate. Biofilm consumes chlorine, releases odor, and can release grey flakes into the water when the jets are started.

The essential rule: biofilm is removed before draining the water, not after. Pour a pipe cleaner (line flush) into the full hot tub, let it circulate for several hours with the jets running as directed — you’ll see the loosened grime on the surface — and only then drain the water, wipe down the shell, and refill with fresh water. Anyone who changes the water without flushing the plumbing fills clean water into dirty pipes, and the smell returns within a few weeks. Your Hot Tub Is Foaming Right Now: A Step-by-Step Rescue Plan

When you need to get foam under control as quickly as possible, follow these steps in order:

  1. Turn off the air blower and jets. Without an air supply, the foam will subside within minutes and you’ll see the water’s true condition.
  2. Skim the foam and oily film off the surface with a net or an absorbent surface sponge.
  3. Test the water: pH (target 7.2–7.6), alkalinity (100–150 ppm), sanitizer (chlorine 1–3 ppm, bromine 3–5 ppm), and hardness (150–250 ppm). Balance the values first — shocking unbalanced water doesn’t work well.
  4. Remove and clean the filter. A clogged cartridge is a reservoir of oils and detergents; rinse it with a jet of water, ideally soaking it in filter-cleaner solution overnight.
  5. Perform a shock sanitization and let the filtration run for at least 12–24 hours with the cover open.
  6. Use a defoamer only as cosmetic first aid when the hot tub is hosting guests that evening — and expect that the foam will return within 24 hours if the cause isn’t addressed.
  7. If the water still foams after shocking and cleaning the filter, replace it. Any more chemicals would only raise the TDS further.

When Is a Water Change the Only Solution?

Chemistry can do a lot, but not everything. Change the water without further attempts if any of these situations occur:

  • foam returns within 48 hours even after shocking, cleaning the filter, and balancing the values,
  • TDS exceeds the fill-water value by more than roughly 1,500 ppm,
  • the water is cloudy and smells even though the measured values are correct,
  • more than 3–4 months of regular use have passed since the last change,
  • a moldy or sulfurous smell has appeared, or flakes are coming from the jets (in this case, always flush the plumbing as well).

A rule of thumb for the change interval: divide the hot tub’s volume in liters by thirty, then by the average number of bathers per day — the result is the number of days until the next change. Prevention: How to Keep the Water Foam- and Odor-Free

Most foam problems don’t have to happen at all. A few habits are all it takes:

  • Shower before every soak — a quick rinse with clean water and no soap removes most cosmetics and sweat. One shower saves more on chemicals than any product.
  • Wash swimwear without fabric softener, ideally just rinsing it in clean water after regular washing; “hot tub” swimwear can simply be rinsed between soaks.
  • Keep hair cosmetics out of the water — pin up hair styled with spray or conditioner above the waterline.
  • Test the water twice a week and perform a smaller oxidizing shock once a week, especially after a weekend with guests.
  • Rinse the filter every week and clean it chemically once a month.
  • Keep drinks and food out of the water — sugar from soda or wine is rich food for bacteria.
  • Buy quality, full-strength chemicals from trusted brands — cheap products containing fillers raise TDS and can foam on their own.
  • Change the water regularly every 3–4 months and flush the plumbing at every change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Foam in a Hot Tub a Health Hazard?

Foam itself is more of a cosmetic problem, but it’s a warning sign: the water contains a heavy organic load and the sanitizer is likely struggling to keep up. Bacteria multiply faster in such water, so always address the foam rather than simply skimming it away.

Will Simply Adding More Chlorine Help with Foam?

A regular dose increase won’t help — surfactants from cosmetics and detergents aren’t broken down by chlorine at normal concentration. Only shock sanitizing combined with cleaning the filter is effective; at high TDS, even that won’t help, and a water change is necessary.

Why Does the Hot Tub Smell of Chlorine Even Though I Haven’t Added Any in a While?

That’s exactly why. The smell isn’t caused by free chlorine but by chloramines — products of chlorine reacting with sweat and cosmetics. They signal that active sanitizer has run out. Paradoxically, the solution is a single high dose: a shock that oxidizes the chloramines, followed by airing out with the cover open.

Can I Use a Defoamer from the Pool Section, or Dish Soap?

A defoamer specifically intended for hot tubs, yes — as temporary first aid. Any dish soap, on the other hand, is exactly what causes foam; it has no place in a hot tub, not even for cleaning the shell, which should always be rinsed thoroughly after washing.

How Do I Recognize Biofilm in the Plumbing?

Typical signs are a musty smell, rapid chlorine loss, slippery walls, and grey or brown flakes shooting out of the jets when started. Flushing the plumbing confirms it: the cleaner loosens the grime, which you’ll see on the surface even before draining the water.
