Sand Coming From Pool Jets: Causes and Step-by-Step Repair

When fine fans of sand appear under the return jets shortly after the filtration starts up, it is almost always filter media escaping from the filter back into the pool. The most common cause is a cracked or loosened lateral arm inside the vessel, or filter media with too fine a grain size. The repair is an afternoon’s work and needs no service call — you simply have to open the filter and know what to look for inside.

Is it really sand from the filter?

Before you start dismantling the filter, make sure you really are looking at filter media. Three similar-looking deposits turn up on a pool floor and each one means something different.

  • Filter sand. Sharp, glassy grains, usually greyish white to beige, distinctly gritty to the touch. It lies in cone-shaped fans directly beneath the return jets, where the water from the filtration flows in. It appears in bursts — most often right after a backwash or after the pump is restarted, not gradually overnight.
  • Wind-blown sand and dust. Finer, inconsistent material mixed with dust, leaves and pollen. It tends to be spread across the whole floor, collecting in corners and in hydraulically dead spots, and it builds up after windy days or rain.   • Yellow algae and deposits. A mustard-yellow film that swirls into a cloud when brushed and then settles again — you would feel no grains in it. It clings to shaded areas, walls and steps, not just the floor. This is a biological problem, not a mechanical one; you will find the procedure in the article on algae in the pool.

The practical test takes a minute: scoop a little of the deposit into a glass of water. Filter sand drops to the bottom immediately and stays there even after stirring. Algae and fine sludge swirl up and settle slowly, leaving the water around them cloudy. A second check: compare the sample with what is left in the bag you used at the last filter sand change — the grain size and colour should match.

When the sand appears and what that means

Timing is the best diagnostic clue. The filter has two hydraulically distinct paths — filtration and backwash — and depending on which one lets the sand through, you can tell where the fault lies.

Why the filter lets media into the pool

A cracked or loosened lateral

At the bottom of the vessel, slotted arms — the laterals — are fitted to the hub. The slots are narrower than the grains of media, so they pass only water. Plastic becomes brittle over the years under chlorine and temperature cycling; a hairline crack or an arm that has worked loose from its thread is all it takes for the media to have a free path into the pipework. This is by far the most common cause and shows up as a continuous leak during normal filtration.

The vertical pipe connecting the lid to the hub at the bottom takes a beating on large filters when the media is poured in. A crack or a loosened joint in the upper section means the water bypasses the filter bed and takes sand with it from the whole volume. The wrong grain size

Lateral slots are sized for a specific fraction — on ordinary pool filters, silica sand of 0.4–0.8 mm. If you pour in builders’ sand, play sand or “fine river” sand, a large proportion of the grains is smaller than the slot and passes straight through into the pool. That is why the specified grain size is not a formality but a design parameter. The same problem arises when media with a high dust content goes into the filter — that will leave to waste on the first backwash.

An overfilled filter

During a backwash the media lifts and loosens, typically by 20–30 % of its volume. If the vessel is filled right up to the neck, the expanding bed reaches the collection section and some of the sand spills over. That is why manufacturers state the media charge on the label and the vessel is filled to roughly two thirds of its height — more is not better, only more expensive and more troublesome.

The internal valve seal (rotor) separates the individual channels. When it wears or cracks, it lets water pass between the branch going to the pool and the branch coming from the filter — sand then gets through even in positions where nothing should flow. An assembly error after a media change

The classic: while filling, sand drops into the open standpipe and then travels straight into the pool. The second variant is a lateral that slipped out or was not tightened during handling, or damaged O-rings on the unions. That is why you always fit a cap on the pipe before filling, or at the very least tape it over with some film and a cloth.

Step-by-step repair

  1. Shut down the filtration and close the valves. Switch off the pump, disconnect it from the mains and close the isolating valves on both the suction and the discharge side. Without that, opening the filter will empty the pool into your plant room.
  2. Drain the filter. Open the drain plug at the bottom of the vessel and the air bleed valve on the lid so the water runs out faster. Expect wet sand to hold water for several more minutes.
  3. Remove the media. The quickest way is to suck it out with a wet vacuum or a submersible dirty-water pump with the hose fed down to the water level inside the vessel — the sand travels along with the water. Take out the remainder with a plastic cup tied to a pole; metal tools do not belong in a filter, they would damage the laterals. On large filters it helps to flood the bed with water so it can be “poured out” rather than scooped.
  4. Inspect the inside. Clean the hub and check every lateral arm against the light: you are looking for cracks, widened slots and loose threads. Check the standpipe along its whole length, the seal under the lid and the union O-rings. The crack is usually hairline — bending the arm slightly helps, as the split opens up.
  5. Replace the damaged part. Laterals are sold individually and in sets, but it pays to replace all the arms at once — they have aged together. You will find the range of spare parts in the structural parts and spares category. When buying, note down the filter type and vessel diameter; spacings and threads differ between brands.
  6. Cover the standpipe. Before you start filling, fit a cap on the pipe, or tape film over it and secure it with a rubber band. This is the most frequently skipped step and it is behind most “repaired” filters that go on passing sand.
  7. Add the correct quantity and fraction. Fill the vessel one third with water so the sand lands softly and does not damage the laterals. Pour slowly, bag by bag, and go strictly by the figure on the filter label — not by estimate. Level the media off; do not tamp it down.
  8. Reassemble and backwash to waste. Clean the lid seating face, tighten the clamping ring, open the isolating valves and run the pump in the Backwash position for 3–5 minutes, until the discharge runs clear. Then Rinse for 30–60 seconds. Only then switch to Filtration — otherwise you will send the residual dust from the new media straight into the pool.
  9. Record the pressure. After the first backwash, read the value on the pressure gauge and note it down. It will be your reference clean pressure for the rest of the season; more detail in the article on filter pressure and the pressure gauge.

How much media and what grain size

The binding figure is always on the filter label or in its manual — it is given in kilograms for the given vessel size. As a rough guide, a filter 400 mm in diameter needs around 25 kg, one of 500 mm roughly 50–60 kg and one of 600 mm approximately 90–110 kg of media. Differences between manufacturers are large, however, so these numbers serve only to estimate your purchase, not to fill the filter.

The standard media is silica filter sand of the 0.4–0.8 mm fraction. Larger filters often take a two-layer charge: a bottom bedding layer of coarser gravel, 1–2 mm or 2–4 mm, covers the laterals and carries the finer layer above it. If the manufacturer specifies a bedding layer, do not leave it out — it is precisely what stops fine grains from bearing directly on the slots.

Filter glass and filter balls are lighter than sand and rise higher during a backwash. Overfilling the vessel shows up sooner with them and is a more common cause of leakage than with classic sand. How to get the sand out of the pool

One fundamental rule: sand on the floor must never be vacuumed through the filtration. It would pass through the pump, abrade the impeller and the mechanical seal, and some of it would come back into the pool. Switch the multiport valve to the Waste position and vacuum with the discharge going outside the pool, or use a vacuum with its own bag that does not filter the water through the plant.

Work slowly with the head close to the floor — fast movements stir the sand up and it settles elsewhere. When vacuuming to waste, watch the water level so the skimmer does not draw in air; top the water up as you go, depending on how much sand there is. Prevention: making sure it does not happen again

  • Backwash gently and with the pump off. Always turn the valve with the pump switched off. Switching it while running causes a pressure surge that breaks laterals and the valve seal alike.
  • Do not exceed the recommended flow rate. A pump oversized for the filter drives the bed at too high a velocity and mechanically stresses the arms. Go by the filter’s parameters when choosing — the article on how to choose a pool pump will help.
  • Watch the pressure gauge. A rise of 0.2–0.3 bar above the clean pressure is the signal to backwash. A sudden drop in pressure, on the other hand, often means a cracked lateral or standpipe.
  • Do not overfill. Stick to the figure on the label and leave room above the bed for expansion.
  • Change the media after a few years, not after a failure. Sand usually lasts 3–5 seasons, glass considerably longer. Every change is an opportunity to inspect the laterals, even if nothing is escaping yet.

When to call a service engineer

You can manage replacing the laterals, the media and the valve seal yourself. Call a professional if the filter vessel itself is cracked (a hairline split in the laminate shows up as a damp patch under pressure), if the lid clamping ring cannot be sealed even with a new O-ring, or if sand still escapes after all the internal parts have been replaced — then it is most often a hidden defect in the hub or badly designed hydraulics. A service call is also in order when you cannot safely isolate the filter because the plant chamber has no shut-off valves.

Frequently asked questions

Can sand get into the pool only after a backwash and not at other times?

Yes, and it is a typical symptom of an overfilled filter. The media lifts during backwashing, part of it spills into the collection section and when you switch back to filtration the water carries it into the pool. The remedy is to remove the excess media down to the level specified on the label, usually to two thirds of the vessel height.

Will a little sand damage the pool pump?

As a one-off, usually not; repeatedly, yes. Grains get between the impeller and the housing, abrade the mechanical seal and in time cause seepage from the shaft. That is why sand is removed from the floor by vacuuming to waste, not through the filtration.

Can I identify a cracked lateral without dismantling the filter?

Not reliably, but there are indirect clues: a continuous loss of media during normal filtration, an unusually low reading on the pressure gauge compared with the reference value, and weaker filtration performance. If sand escapes only after a backwash, the laterals are probably fine and the problem is overfilling.

Can I use a finer fraction instead of sand for better filtration?

No. Lateral slots have a fixed width set by the design and finer grains will pass through them. If you want to filter finer particles, reach for filter glass in the specified fraction — it filters more finely while keeping the grain size the filter can cope with.

Do I have to replace the whole charge after the repair, or can I put the original media back?

If the media is less than two seasons old, is not caked into lumps and has no foreign matter in it, you can rinse it in clean water and put it back. With older media it is not worth it — the filter is open anyway and new media is the cheapest item in the whole repair.

Sand in the pool looks like a serious failure, but it is in fact one of the most easily repaired things in the entire plant: a cracked lateral arm, an overfilled vessel or the wrong media fraction.
