Alkalinity is used to stabilise pH and reduce its consumption. At the same time it increases the efficiency of chlorine and can also be used in chlorine-free water treatment.
Why alkalinity matters
Water heating and disinfectants can cause alkalinity to drop and the pH to fluctuate as a result. Total alkalinity represents the sum of the basic substances dissolved in the water that prevent sudden changes in pH. The key component is the bicarbonate anion, which can neutralise the addition of both acid and base, so no significant change in pH occurs.
If total alkalinity is too high, the pH also tends to be high and difficult to lower, increasing the consumption of both acid and disinfectant. If alkalinity is too low, the pH is unstable and fluctuates strongly.

Test strips are sufficient for guidance; photometers are more suitable for precise measurement.
