Jet placement matters more than jet appearance. A well-designed seat follows anatomy: strong jets where the muscle layer is thick, gentle ones where bone sits just beneath the skin.
Neck and trapezius muscles: first aid for office stiffness
The upper trapezius is the most commonly overloaded area in people who work sitting down. Neck jets tend to be small, placed in a collar above the headrest or just below the water line at shoulder level. Pinpoint streams with lower pressure are ideal — the neck cannot take the same intensity as the lower back, because the muscles are thin and the cervical vertebrae lie directly beneath them.
Back and lower back: the hot tub’s main performance
Two rows of directional jets line the spine, following the erector muscles of the trunk, and one or two large dorsal jets usually sit in the sacral area. This is the arrangement that consumes most of the pump’s output and is the main argument for the so-called therapy seat, of which each hot tub usually has only one or two.
Feet: small area, big effect
Jets in the floor of the foot well aim at the soles, where a great many nerve endings converge — which is why a foot massage feels so substantial even though it comes from a few small jets. After a day on your feet or in uncomfortable shoes, this is often the most appreciated zone of the entire hot tub.

Do more jets automatically mean a better hot tub?
No — and it is the most widespread mistake when choosing one. Jet count is a marketing-friendly number, but massage strength is determined by the power of the massage pumps and by how many jets the flow is divided between. A hundred jets on one weak pump means a hundred feeble trickles; thirty jets on two strong pumps means a massage you can actually feel.
A rough rule of thumb: one massage pump of around 2 HP (roughly 1.5 kW) can drive on the order of 15–25 standard jets, and even fewer large dorsal jets. If a hot tub has 60 or more jets and a single pump, something is wrong — either the jets are miniature, or only part of the circuit will ever run at once. Build quality also plays a role: stainless-steel trim rings and bearings on rotary jets last longer than all-plastic inserts, and the ability to close each jet individually (by turning its rim) lets you redirect the power exactly where you want it at that moment.
How do you adjust the massage intensity?
A hot tub offers three levels of regulation, and it pays to know them all:
- Air valves (venturi): rotary controls on the top rim that mix air into the circuit. An open valve = a harder, “fizzier” massage; a closed one = a smoother, quieter stream. Each valve serves one group of jets.
- Diverter valve: a larger lever that switches the flow between circuits — typically between two seats or between the back and foot jets. This lets you boost the zone you are currently using at the expense of the others.
- Individual jets: most types open and close by turning the outer rim, and directional jets can be tilted. Closing the jets you are not using increases the pressure in the rest of the circuit.

How to “program” your massage: a 15–20 minute ritual
The best results come not from sitting in one spot with everything running at full blast, but from a short circuit through the zones. A proven routine looks like this:
- 2–3 minutes of air bubbles: run only the blower, let your body get used to the temperature and release surface tension.
- 5 minutes for the back and lower back: move to the therapy seat, switch the diverter to the back circuit, open the air valves about halfway.
- 3–4 minutes for the neck and trapezius: reduce the intensity (close the valve slightly) and let the small jets work on the upper trapezius; rest your head and pull your shoulders down.
- 3–4 minutes for the legs: switch the flow to the foot and calf jets and position your soles directly against the streams.
- 2–3 minutes to wind down: switch off the massage pumps, leave only gentle bubbles or a calm surface, and breathe out.
Overall, keep to 15–20 minutes at 36–38 °C; a longer intense massage adds nothing extra for the muscles and needlessly stresses the body with heat. Never aim a strong stream directly at the spine or a joint for a long time — you massage muscles, not bones.

Jet maintenance: little work, big difference
Jets do not demand much, but they cannot be ignored. In hard water, limescale builds up on the inserts and the bearings of rotary jets: the jet then sticks, stops rotating or can no longer be fully closed. The simplest maintenance routine: at every water change (usually every 3–4 months), remove the jets, rinse them and leave inserts with deposits overnight in a descaling solution or in vinegar water. FAQ: the most common questions about hydromassage jets
Why is the water suddenly flowing more weakly from the jets?
Most often the cause is trivial: a clogged filter, a closed air valve, the diverter switched to another circuit, or partially closed jet rims. Only when cleaning the filter and checking the valves does not help should you look for a problem in the pump or an airlock in the plumbing.
Can the massage intensity be reduced for sensitive people?
Yes, in several ways at once: close the air valves (a stream without bubbles is softer), switch the pump to a lower speed, partially close the rim of a specific jet, or use only the air-bubble massage. Sensitive users are also better off in a seat further away from the therapy jets.
Are jets interchangeable between manufacturers?
Only partially. Inserts differ in thread, bayonet fitting and diameter, so when buying a replacement jet, always go by the marking on its body or by the name of the shell manufacturer.
