How to find the right size In pool plumbing the size is given by the outside diameter, because fittings are glued onto it - a 50 mm hose has an outside diameter of 50 mm and an inside diameter of 42 mm. Choose fittings and valves by the same outside diameter, not by the bore. For pressure pipes the designation also includes the wall thickness, for example 110/4.2 mm. If you need a longer run, a 25 m pack works out cheaper than buying by the metre. Flexi hose or rigid pipe Flexi hose bends around a corner without elbows and tolerates slight ground movement well, which is why it is used mainly for connecting the equipment and in places where rigid pipe would crack. Rigid pipe is stiffer and better suited to long straight runs in the ground. Transparent pipe is fitted where you want to see the water flow, for example after the filter.
