For a threaded tee, the marking 50 × 1 1/2″ means two solvent-weld sockets for a 50 mm pipe and a branch with a 1 1/2″ internal thread. A smaller threaded branch, for example 1/2″, is used to fit a thermometer, pressure sensor or automatic chemistry probe. 90° or 45° A 90° tee is compact and suits a cramped equipment pit. A 45° branch offers less resistance to the water and puts less strain on the pump, so it is used where flows join – for example, the inlet from several skimmers and the bottom drain into a common suction line. What to watch out for Every branch and elbow adds hydraulic resistance; an unnecessarily complicated route reduces flow and the pump then performs worse.
