Milky cloudy hot tub water almost always comes down to one of five causes: microscopic particles from heavy use, unbalanced pH and alkalinity, weak disinfection, a clogged filter, or mineral precipitation from hard water. The good news: if the water has simply lost its sparkle and doesn’t smell, you can usually restore it to crystal-clear within 24 hours — by testing the water, correcting the chemistry, shocking it with disinfectant, cleaning the filter, and running continuous filtration. Why does hot tub water turn milky white?
Cloudiness is physically always the same thing: an enormous number of microscopic particles are suspended in the water, scattering light. The water doesn’t look dirty like mud — it looks milky, greyish, or “tired,” losing its sparkle. The key question isn’t “how do I mask the cloudiness,” but where the particles are coming from.
A hot tub is far more prone to this than a pool. There’s roughly a hundred times less water per bather than in a pool, and the 36–40 °C temperature speeds up both chemical reactions and bacterial growth. The same cosmetics that would simply “disappear” in a pool can cloud a hot tub’s small volume in a single evening.

Step-by-step procedure: clear water within 24 hours
The following procedure addresses all five causes in a logical order. Don’t skip steps — shocking water with unbalanced pH largely wastes the chemical, since chlorine’s effectiveness drops to roughly a third at pH 8.0 compared with pH 7.2.
- Test the water (5 minutes). Measure pH, alkalinity, and free chlorine or bromine, ideally along with calcium hardness. Without numbers you’re just guessing — see our full guide on how to test pool and hot tub water.
- Balance alkalinity and pH. First bring alkalinity to 80–120 mg/l, then pH to 7.2–7.6. Alkalinity acts as a pH buffer, which is why it comes first. After dosing, run circulation for 20–30 minutes and re-test.
- Apply a shock dose of disinfectant. Use a chlorine shock per the manufacturer’s instructions (typically targeting around 10 mg/l briefly), or a bromine or non-chlorine activator shock if you maintain with bromine. Keep the jets running and the thermal cover off — the oxidized contaminants need somewhere to escape.
- Clean or replace the filter. Rinse the cartridge with a strong jet of water between the pleats; if there’s a greasy film, soak it overnight in filter cleaner solution (rinsing alone won’t remove grease). Replace any cartridge with damaged or permanently flattened pleats right away — it’s the cheapest part in the whole system and the only sieve you have.
- Run filtration continuously for 24 hours. This is the step people underestimate most. Chemistry doesn’t remove particles from the water — the filter does, and it needs the hot tub’s entire volume to pass through it many times over.
- Use a clarifier only as a supplement. A clarifier (flocculant) clumps microscopic particles into larger ones the filter can then catch. It speeds up the final polish but doesn’t address the root cause — reach for a clarifier alone, without shocking and a clean filter, and the cloudiness will be back within a week.

Test the water again after 24 hours. Free chlorine should be back in the 1–3 mg/l range (bromine 3–5 mg/l), and the surface should have its sparkle back. If the water is only slightly hazy, keep filtration running for another 12 hours, and only then add a small dose of clarifier if needed.
When does cloudiness signal biofilm in the plumbing?
There’s one scenario the steps above won’t fix: the water clears up nicely, then turns milky again within two or three days even though the chemistry checks out. That’s the classic signature of biofilm — a slimy layer of bacteria, body oils, and cosmetics that has built up inside the pipes and jets, where routine disinfection barely reaches. Biofilm continually releases particles and bacteria back into the water and “eats” chlorine, so dosing stops being enough.
Signs pointing to biofilm: cloudiness keeps coming back, disinfectant consumption noticeably rises, small flakes or streaks appear when the jets are switched on, and the walls feel slippery even shortly after cleaning. At that point, pouring in more chemicals won’t help.
The fix is a pipe flush and a complete water change: dose the old water with a pipe/line flush cleaner, let it circulate for several hours with the jets running, then drain the hot tub, wipe down the shell, clean or replace the filter, and refill with fresh water. Prevention: keeping cloudiness from coming back
Milky cloudiness is almost always the result of more contaminants entering a small volume of hot water than the disinfectant and filter could keep up with. Prevention comes down to three habits:
- Shower before bathing — no soap, just water. A quick rinse washes off most sunscreen, deodorant, and cosmetics. One bather who skips the shower is estimated to introduce roughly as much organic contamination as an entire afternoon of otherwise empty operation. For swimwear, rinsing without fabric softener helps too — residual detergent is a common source of both microscopic particles and foam.
- Rinse the filter regularly. Rinse the cartridge with a jet of water every week or two, degrease it with filter cleaner once a month, and replace it roughly once a year. Ideally keep two cartridges and alternate them — one works while the other dries out fully (complete drying kills bacteria in the pleats).
- Test the water 2–3 times a week. You’ll catch unbalanced pH and dropping disinfectant levels before they show up as cloudiness. Add a smaller preventive oxidizing (shock) dose after any particularly busy soak. When is a full water change the only solution?
Hot tub water isn’t infinitely fixable. Every chemical correction adds to the total dissolved solids, and past a certain point the water starts behaving “tired”: chemistry stops working predictably, cloudiness keeps returning, and product consumption climbs. Change the water without further attempts if any of the following apply:
- Cloudiness has returned for the third time within a few weeks despite the correct procedure and a clean filter.
- The water also smells, feels slippery, or releases flakes from the jets — signs of biofilm (see above — always combine with a pipe flush).
- More than 3–4 months have passed since the last water change under normal use.
- Skin or eye irritation appears after bathing even though the readings “look fine on paper.”
Changing the water in a typical hot tub means 1,000–1,500 litres, so at a water/sewage rate of around €5/m³ that’s roughly €5–8, plus the energy to reheat it. That’s far less than what you’ll spend on chemicals fighting a losing battle with “tired” water.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to bathe in milky, cloudy water?
We don’t recommend it. Even if it’s “just” cosmetics, cloudiness often goes hand in hand with insufficient disinfection, meaning elevated bacteria levels. Wait until the water is clear after shocking and filtering, with free chlorine back in the 1–3 mg/l range.
How long does it take to clear cloudy water?
With the correct procedure (chemistry, shock, clean filter, non-stop filtration), usually 12–24 hours. If the water is still hazy after 48 hours, look for a deeper cause: a worn filter, hard water, or biofilm in the plumbing.
Will a clarifier alone fix cloudy water?
In the short term, yes; long term, no. A clarifier just clumps particles together so the filter can catch them — it doesn’t address weak disinfection, incorrect pH, or a clogged filter. Use it as the last step in the procedure, not as first aid.
Why does the water turn cloudy right after filling with fresh water?
