The difference isn’t down to how careful the owner is — it’s physics. A hot tub combines three factors that favor bacteria and that a pool simply doesn’t have to the same degree: high temperature, a small water volume, and intense aerosol formation.

Temperature. Hot tub water is typically kept between 36 and 40 °C (97–104 °F). According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the range of roughly 25 to 45 °C (77–113 °F) is the most favorable for Legionella bacteria to multiply. While a cooler pool is a much less hospitable environment for microbes, a warm hot tub is an ideal incubator for them — if disinfection is lacking.

Small volume. A home hot tub typically holds 1,000 to 1,500 liters — a fraction of what a pool holds. That small volume can be thrown off balance in a single evening: every bather adds sweat, skin oils, and cosmetic residue, which use up disinfectant far faster than in a large pool. Readings can therefore swing sharply.

Aerosol. The jets push air into the water and spray a fine mist above the surface. That mist is the main reason hot tubs come up in connection with Legionella at all — the bacteria aren’t transmitted by drinking the water, but by inhaling the aerosol. A pool with a calm surface doesn’t generate anywhere near that amount of inhalable droplets.

Pillar One: Consistent Disinfection Within the Target Range

The basis of hygiene is simple: the water must always contain an effective disinfectant residual. Not just briefly after adding chemicals, but continuously. If disinfection drops to zero for even a day or two in warm water, bacteria get their opening.

Because of the higher load and temperature, hot tubs call for higher, more stable levels than a pool. As a rough guide, free chlorine is kept within the range suited to hot water, or bromine is used instead, since it degrades more slowly in heat and reacts less to pH swings. For public hot tubs, the CDC references a pH of 7.2–7.8 together with a corresponding disinfectant residual; home use can be a bit more relaxed, but the principle of always having disinfectant present still applies.

Pillar Two: Biofilm in the Pipework

This is the pillar that gets underestimated the most, because you can’t see it. Biofilm is a thin, slimy layer that bacteria build up on the inner walls of pipes, jets, and the pump. It acts as their hideout: in the hot, nutrient-rich water of a hot tub it grows quickly and settles exactly where ordinary maintenance can’t reach.

The fundamental problem is that chlorine at a normal maintenance concentration doesn’t destroy biofilm. Pillar Three: A Filter That Actually Filters

The filter traps dirt before it becomes food for bacteria. But a clogged cartridge doesn’t just filter worse — it becomes a reservoir for microbes itself, while also choking flow, so the water circulates and disinfects less effectively. Filter care has three levels:

  • Weekly: remove the cartridge and rinse it with a jet of water to wash coarse debris out of the pleats.
  • Monthly: deep cleaning — soak the cartridge overnight in a degreasing cleaning solution that dissolves oils and deposits plain water can’t rinse away.
  • Roughly once a year: replace with a new one. Over time the cartridge fiber loses its ability to trap fine particles, and no amount of cleaning restores it.

Let’s address this topic factually, without unnecessary scaremongering. Two groups of bacteria are the most relevant in a hot tub.

Legionella is a bacterium commonly present in aquatic environments. It becomes a problem when it multiplies in warm, stagnant, undisinfected water and ends up in an inhalable aerosol. According to the CDC, a person becomes infected by inhaling mist containing the bacteria — not by bathing as such, nor from another person. The illness has two forms: Legionnaires’ disease (the more severe form, a type of pneumonia) with an incubation period typically of 2 to 10 days, and the milder Pontiac fever (fever and muscle aches without pneumonia), which appears within a few hours to three days and usually clears up within a week.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa causes what’s known as “hot tub folliculitis” — an itchy rash with red bumps that appears on skin that was in the water. The CDC states it’s prevented by maintaining the correct pH (7.2–7.6) and adequate disinfection. The connection is clear: both risks share the same root — water without effective disinfection and neglected pipework.

Who Should Be Especially Careful?

Most healthy people cope with contact with common waterborne bacteria without any consequences. There are, however, groups for whom greater caution is warranted, and ideally a doctor’s advice on whether and how to use a hot tub:

  • People with weakened immune systems — after transplants, during cancer treatment, or with chronic illnesses.
  • Older adults and people with chronic lung disease, for whom an infection can take a more severe course.
