Most hot tub owners only know the pump they can hear — the powerful motor that fires up when you press the jets button. Yet water clarity, a stable temperature and the size of your electricity bill are usually decided by a completely different, far smaller motor: the circulation pump, which runs quietly in the background and draws somewhere between 60 and 250 W. This article explains the difference between the two pumps, why continuous running of the small pump pays off more than short bursts from the big one, and how to tell when circulation has stopped doing its job.

Why does a hot tub have two different pumps?
A hot tub solves two entirely different tasks and each of them needs a different pump characteristic. The first task is massage: pushing a large volume of water through the jets at high pressure so that the stream really works on your muscles. The second task is water circulation — slowly but continuously drawing the contents of the shell through the filter, the heater element and, where fitted, an ozonator or UV lamp.
If a single motor handled both tasks, it would always be badly sized for one of them. A jet pump drawing 1.5 to 3 kW is hugely oversized for mere filtration, noisy and expensive to run. Conversely, a small circulation pump would never get the jets moving.
On better models, manufacturers therefore separate the roles. The jet pump only switches on when you are bathing. The circulation (circ) pump runs for long hours, often continuously, and makes sure the water does not stagnate between soaks. The control pack then treats the two as independent circuits.

Why does continuous running of a small pump pay off?
Filtration happens continuously, not in bursts
Contaminants enter the water all the time — from skin, cosmetics, dust and fallen leaves. Continuous circulation captures them as they arrive, so they never build up. Burst filtration twice a day, by contrast, means the water stands still for hours between cycles and particles have time to settle or break down. The efficiency of the whole system stands or falls with how freely the filter passes water — which is why regular cleaning of the cartridge filter is the single most important maintenance job.
Sanitiser is distributed evenly
Both chlorine and bromine need moving water to reach every corner of the shell, including the jet pipework. In standing water, pockets of zero concentration form where biofilm thrives. The temperature is steadier and heating works more efficiently
The heater element only heats the water passing through it at that moment. With continuous circulation, the thermostat measures the real temperature of the whole shell and the heater tops it up in short, gentle doses. In a tub without circulation, the temperature drops by a few tenths of a degree between cycles and the heater then has to work hard all at once. The difference in total consumption tends to be smaller than expected, but the comfort is noticeably different: the water is always at the set temperature, not at whatever temperature the last cycle managed to reach.
Winter running and freeze protection
The strongest argument arrives in frosty weather. Moving water freezes far less readily than standing water, and the circulation pump also maintains flow in the pipework, where ice would do the most damage. Models without a circulation pump: when is that enough?
Plenty of hot tubs — especially smaller, cheaper ones and virtually all inflatables — have no separate circulation pump. Filtration on these runs in cycles via the jet pump, which starts up at programmed times either on low speed (with two-speed motors) or at full power.
This approach has its merits. One component that could fail is removed, the purchase price drops, and for a tub used once a week by two people the result is perfectly adequate.
The limits show up in three situations:
- Heavy use. A tub for 5–6 people used several times a week produces more contamination than two short cycles can process.
- Hard frost. Without continuous circulation, the risk of freezing in the pipework rises, especially on an outdoor tub with no insulated equipment bay.

On a tub without circulation, therefore, schedule the filtration cycles for daytime hours and in winter extend their length.
How to tell that the circulation pump is not doing its job
The circulation pump is so quiet that its failure often goes unnoticed directly — it shows up in the consequences instead. Typical symptoms:

- Cloudiness and rapidly deteriorating water. Water that turns cloudy within one or two days signals that not enough water is passing through the filter — see Cloudy hot tub water.
- Air in the system. Intermittent gurgling, a rasping noise and irregular running point to an air lock.
- Humming with no pumping. The motor makes a noise but the water does not move — typically a seized impeller or a failed capacitor.
- No flow at the filter suction. The simplest test: hold your palm against the suction opening of the filter chamber. With circulation running you should feel a gentle pull.
The most common causes of failure and what to do about them
A blocked filter
By far the most common cause. A clogged cartridge raises resistance so much that a small pump practically stops pumping. Take the filter out, start circulation and watch whether flow returns — if it does, the problem is purely one of maintenance.
An air lock after refilling
A classic after a water change. When the shell is filled from above, air is trapped in the pipework and the pump does not prime — it runs dry, makes a noise and does not pump. The fix: switch the hot tub off, slightly loosen the union on the pump’s discharge side, wait until water starts to run out, then tighten the union again. Current advice is to fill the water with a hose placed in the filter chamber, because the system then fills from the bottom up and air has nowhere to get trapped. Never let the pump run dry for more than a few tens of seconds — you risk destroying the seal.
A fouled impeller
Hair, fibres from swimwear or small fragments wrap themselves around the impeller. The pump then hums but pumps little or nothing. On some models the impeller can be cleaned after removing the front cover; on others the wet end has to be replaced.
A worn mechanical seal and water leakage
The seal separates the wet end from the motor and it is the most frequently replaced part. The first symptom is usually water dripping under the pump or a chalky white deposit on the housing. Do not ignore a leak — water gets into the bearings and windings, and a cheap repair quickly turns into an expensive one.
A motor seized after winter
On a tub laid up over winter, the shaft can seize through corrosion or deposits. The motor then growls when switched on and trips the breaker. Carefully turning the shaft by hand after disconnecting from the mains sometimes helps; often, though, this is the end of its service life.

Maintenance, service life and what a replacement costs
A circulation pump needs almost no attention — what tends to destroy it is mainly what we expose it to. Three habits extend its life the most: a clean filter, balanced chemistry (low pH and aggressive water destroy the seal and the gaskets) and a dry equipment bay with no standing water.

A practical rule: if the pump is over six years old and the repair cost exceeds roughly half the price of a new one, replacement is worthwhile. A motor that has had water inside it really is not worth repairing. How to set the filtration cycles in the control pack
Control packs (Balboa, Gecko and others) let you set the number and length of filtration cycles. The table summarises recommendations by type of tub.

A general rule of thumb: the contents of the tub should pass through the filter at least two to three times a day. On a 1,200-litre tub with a circulation pump delivering 3,000 l/h, that means roughly an hour of running per turnover, so a minimum of 3 hours a day. How do I tell whether my hot tub has a circulation pump?
The surest source is the spec sheet or the label in the equipment bay: a circulation pump has a power input in the tens to low hundreds of watts, a jet pump in kilowatts. A practical test: if water flows quietly even when all the jets are off and the display is not showing a filtration cycle, the tub has circulation.
Can a circulation pump really run non-stop?
Yes, it is built precisely for that. Most models have a motor cooled by the water flowing through them, and continuous running is their default mode. The only risk is running dry — that is, a situation where the tub is drained or air is trapped in the system.
Will I save money by switching circulation off at night?
On the pump’s own consumption, yes — in the order of a few euros a month. But you risk poorer water quality, higher chemical consumption and freezing in winter.
