Sensitive Skin and “Chlorine Allergy”: How to Enjoy Your Pool and Hot Tub Without Irritation

Itching, reddened skin or dry, tight hands after a swim — and the quick conclusion: “I’m allergic to chlorine”. In reality, a true chlorine allergy practically doesn’t exist; the vast majority of problems are caused by skin irritation from chloramines (by-products of chlorination) and poorly balanced water, above all high pH. The good news: both can be measured and corrected — and anyone who wants to go further now has several routes to considerably gentler water, from a UV lamp through salt electrolysis all the way to a natural pool with no chemicals at all.

What actually irritates people: chlorine, or chloramines?

Free chlorine at the concentration a properly maintained private pool should have (0.3–0.6 mg/l, 1–3 mg/l in a hot tub) does not irritate most people’s skin. The trouble starts the moment chlorine reacts with organic matter in the water — sweat, urea, cosmetics, sunscreen, body oils. This produces chloramines (combined chlorine), and it is precisely these that cause the typical “chlorine” smell, stinging eyes, and irritation of the skin and airways.

It’s something of a paradox: a pool that “reeks of chlorine” usually isn’t suffering from too much chlorine but from too little. The free chlorine has been used up reacting with contaminants, leaving irritating chloramines behind in the water. The solution is therefore almost never to “stop chlorinating” — quite the opposite: give the water a one-off shock chlorination, break down the chloramines, and then keep the chemistry in balance.

Does chlorine allergy even exist?

From a medical point of view, “chlorine allergy” is almost always irritant contact dermatitis — a non-allergic irritation of the skin by an irritant substance, or an aggravation of pre-existing eczema or atopic dermatitis. A genuine allergic reaction to chlorine itself is rare. That doesn’t mean you should dismiss your symptoms, though: if a rash persists for days after swimming, keeps coming back even with well-maintained water, or gets worse, it belongs in the hands of a dermatologist, not an internet forum. First aid: fix the chemistry before you change the technology

Before you invest in a UV lamp or electrolysis, check the basics. Most “sensitive reactions” disappear as soon as the water meets three conditions.

1. pH between 7.2 and 7.6. High pH (above 7.8) irritates the skin and eyes all by itself — human tears have a pH of around 7.4, and the further the water is from that value, the worse the body tolerates it. High pH also dramatically reduces the effectiveness of chlorine, so you have to dose more and the cycle of irritation spins up. If your eyes sting after swimming, measure the pH first, not the chlorine.

2. Free chlorine in range, combined chlorine low. The goal is free chlorine of 0.3–0.6 mg/l in a pool (1–3 mg/l in a hot tub because of the temperature) and combined chlorine (chloramines) below 0.3 mg/l. 3. Regular shock chlorination. It sounds counterintuitive, but shock treatment is sensitive skin’s best friend: a short-term high dose of chlorine breaks down chloramines and organic contaminants, and the water returns to a state where a minimal maintenance dose is enough. After shocking, however, wait to swim until the free chlorine drops back into the normal range — swimming in freshly shocked water is exactly the moment when sensitive skin pays the price.

Routes to less irritating water: a comparison

When the chemistry is right and your skin still protests, it makes sense to reduce the water’s overall chemical load. None of the following routes (except the natural pool) removes chlorine entirely, but all of them significantly reduce the dose required — and with it the amount of chloramines.

UV lamp and ozone: less chlorine, fewer chloramines

A UV-C lamp plumbed into the filtration circuit neutralises bacteria, viruses and algae, and at the same time uses photolysis to break down the very chloramines that irritate the skin. Ozone goes a step further — it is a stronger oxidant than chlorine and burns off organic contaminants before the chlorine even gets a chance to react with them. Salt water: chlorine that feels different

Salt electrolysis doesn’t remove chlorine — it produces it directly from dissolved salt. Even so, owners with sensitive skin often describe it as a relief: the water contains none of the stabilisers and by-products of tablet chemistry, the chlorine is dosed continuously in small amounts (fewer swings, fewer chloramines), and the mild salinity of around 0.35% feels natural on the skin, much like a weak saline solution. Active oxygen: the chlorine-free route for hot tubs

In a hot tub, where the water volume is small and you change it several times a year, chlorine can be replaced with active oxygen entirely. It takes discipline — shorter dosing intervals, rigorous testing and regular water changes — but the reward is water with no chlorine smell, which most sensitive users tolerate noticeably better. Natural pool: zero chemicals, a different philosophy

For anyone for whom even a minimal dose of disinfectant is a problem, there is a radical solution: the natural pool, also known as a swimming pond. The water is cleaned by a regeneration zone with plants and microorganisms; no chemicals are used at all. The price is a higher purchase cost, greater space requirements and water that will never be “chemically sterile” — but for people with atopic skin and families with sensitive children, it is often the most pleasant water they have ever swum in.

Habits that help sensitive skin right away

Even without investing a single euro, a few habits can significantly reduce irritation.

  • Shower before swimming. Rinsing off with clean water washes away sweat, cosmetics and creams — precisely the substances that turn into chloramines in the water. Pre-wetted skin also absorbs less pool water. You’re helping yourself and everyone else in the pool.
  • Shower right after swimming. Don’t let pool water dry on your skin. A short lukewarm shower without harsh soap is enough; a long hot shower actually dries the skin out further.
  • Moisturiser within 3 minutes of towelling off. Chlorine disrupts the skin’s lipid barrier — an emollient (replenishing) cream helps restore it. For people with atopic skin, this is the single most important step.
  • Don’t swim in freshly shocked water. After shock chlorination, always wait until the free chlorine drops into the normal range — verify with a tester, not by guessing.
  • Wash swimwear after every use. Chemical residues in the fabric irritate the skin even when dry.

Children and sensitive skin

Children’s skin is thinner, has a weaker lipid barrier and reacts to chloramines sooner and more strongly than adult skin. The rules are the same, just stricter: in a family pool, keep the chemistry consistently in the lower half of the recommended range, always shower and moisturise children after swimming, and cut swim time short at the first signs of redness. When it’s no longer “just irritation”: seeing a doctor

Proper chemistry solves most problems, but not all of them. See a dermatologist if a rash persists for more than a few days after swimming, keeps recurring even with demonstrably well-maintained water, spreads, weeps, or itches intensely at night. You should also pay attention to respiratory symptoms — coughing, wheezing or airway irritation after time at an indoor pool can be linked to chloramines in the air of a poorly ventilated hall and belong in front of a doctor, especially in children and asthmatics. Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Can my skin itch after the pool even when the chlorine is in range?

Yes. The most common culprit is high pH (above 7.8), which dries out and irritates the skin regardless of chlorine, or combined chlorine (chloramines), which an ordinary basic tester won’t detect. Measure pH plus free and total chlorine — the difference between total and free chlorine should be below 0.3 mg/l.

Is salt water suitable for sensitive skin?

Most sensitive users tolerate it better than conventional tablet chlorination: chlorine from electrolysis contains no stabilisers or additives, it is dosed evenly, and mildly salty water feels more natural on the skin. Chlorine as such remains in the water, however, so if you have a genuine intolerance, reach for active oxygen or a natural pool instead.

Would cutting out chlorine completely help?

In a conventional pool, no — without disinfection the water quickly becomes a microbiological hazard that is worse for skin and health than chlorine. The safe chlorine-free routes are active oxygen (mainly in a hot tub, with a disciplined routine) and a natural pool with biological cleaning. Otherwise the rule stands: less chlorine yes, no chlorine without a replacement no.

How long after shock chlorination should you stay out of the water?

Until the free chlorine drops back into the normal range — below roughly 1 mg/l in a pool, below 3 mg/l in a hot tub. Depending on the dose and sunlight, this takes around 8–24 hours. Never go by guesswork or smell; always verify the value with a tester.

Is there a test that can confirm a chlorine allergy?

A dermatologist can use epicutaneous (patch) tests to distinguish a genuine allergic reaction from irritant dermatitis and rule out other causes — such as an allergy to sunscreen ingredients or neoprene. If your symptoms persist, a professional examination is more reliable than any home experimenting.
