12 Mistakes New Hot Tub Owners Make (and How to Avoid Them from the First Fill)

Your first hot tub is a joy — and at the same time a machine that can quickly remind a newcomer that 1,000–1,500 litres of warm water play by their own rules. The good news: the vast majority of problems new owners run into stem from the same dozen mistakes. This ranking walks through them one by one — why each is a problem, what it costs, and how to get it right from the very first fill.

Water and chemistry mistakes: where newcomers lose most often

1. Filling up and dosing chemicals by guesswork

The most common beginner’s start: fill the tub, throw in “some chlorine” and hope for the best. But sanitiser only works reliably in properly balanced water — at the wrong pH, chlorine loses most of its effectiveness and the water goes bad even if you dose plenty of it. The usual result is cloudiness, odour and skin irritation within the first week.

2. Getting in right after a shock dose

Shock chlorination after filling (or after a weekend of guests) is the right move — jumping into the water straight afterwards is not. At that moment, the sanitiser concentration is several times above the hygienic limit for bathing, and your skin, eyes and airways will let you know it.

The right way: after shocking, run the filtration with the cover open and return to the water only once free chlorine has dropped below 3 mg/l — typically within 12–24 hours. The test always decides, not the clock.

3. Waiting for foam and cloudiness to “settle on their own”

Milky, cloudy water or foam on the surface won’t fix itself in a hot tub — unlike a pool, there’s little water, a high temperature and intensive use, so the problem is more likely to double overnight. Waiting also drives up the amount of chemicals you’ll then need to rescue the water.

4. Mixing chlorine and bromine in one dispenser

This is the only mistake in the ranking that is outright dangerous. Chlorine and bromine tablets react chemically with each other — in a shared floater or dispenser they can trigger a violent reaction, intense heat up to ignition, and the release of toxic gases. Never mix them, not even “just to use up the last few tablets”.

Operating mistakes: where the most money is lost

5. Switching the hot tub off “to save money” between soaks

Intuition says: not soaking, so switch it off. Physics says the opposite — reheating 1,000 litres of cooled water from 15 to 38 °C swallows around 27 kWh, while maintaining the temperature under a quality cover typically costs 3–6 kWh a day. If you soak two or three times a week, “economical” switching off actually loses you money — and on top of that you wait hours for the water to heat up.

6. Keeping a cheap or waterlogged thermal cover

Most heat escapes not through the walls but through evaporation from the surface. A thin, sagging or waterlogged thermal cover can therefore double your electricity bill — soaked polystyrene conducts heat many times better than dry foam and practically stops insulating. Yet newcomers often treat the cover as an afterthought.

7. Ignoring the filter for the entire first month

The cartridge filter is the water’s only mechanical protection — and in a new hot tub it clogs faster than ever, because it catches residues from manufacturing, installation and those first enthusiastic soaks. A clogged filter means weak flow, cloudiness, an FLO message on the display and a pump straining for nothing.

8. Powering the hot tub through an extension cord

“I’ll just plug it in with an extension cord until the electrician comes.” A hot tub is a permanent appliance drawing kilowatts — an ordinary extension cord overheats under such a load, the voltage drop punishes the pumps, and an unprotected outdoor connection is an electric shock hazard. On top of that, most manufacturers void the warranty for this kind of hookup.

The right way: a fixed connection with its own circuit breaker and a 30 mA residual current device (RCD), installed by an electrician with an inspection report. Habit mistakes: small things with big consequences

9. Getting in without showering, covered in cosmetics

Deodorants, body lotions, sunscreens, detergent residues in swimwear — all of it dissolves in 38 °C water and turns into foam, a greasy film and rapidly rising sanitiser consumption. One soak by four unshowered people loads the water about as much as a week of normal use.

10. Never changing the water and relying on chemicals

A common misconception: “The water is crystal clear, so why drain it?” In a hot tub’s small volume, dissolved solids accumulate every day, and beyond a certain point no amount of chemicals can hold the water — doses rise, results worsen. In a warm, under-sanitised environment, biofilm also forms in the pipework: an ideal hideout for bacteria, including Legionella.

11. Letting children soak for long periods at 38 °C

A child’s body overheats significantly faster than an adult’s — smaller body, immature thermoregulation. Long soaking in 38 °C water puts small children at risk of overheating, lethargy and even collapse; the US CPSC therefore advises against hot tubs for children under 5 altogether.

12. Overlooking small leaks and error codes

A little puddle under the skimmer, an occasional FLO on the display, a temperature that “sometimes doesn’t hold” — newcomers often put these signals off until the hot tub gives up entirely. But a small leak soaks the insulation and the wiring, and an error code that would cost a few tens of euros to fix turns into a repair running into the hundreds.

Experienced owners differ from newcomers not in the amount of work, but in regularity. Ten minutes a week following a checklist replaces hours of firefighting — and simply doesn’t allow most of the mistakes in this ranking to happen.

How long after filling can I take my first soak?

Usually within 24–48 hours: the water has to heat up to the target temperature (roughly 12–24 hours for 1,000 litres, depending on heater output), then you balance alkalinity and pH, do the initial shock dose and wait for free chlorine to drop below 3 mg/l. The water test always decides, not the elapsed time.

Do I have to switch the hot tub off when I go on holiday?

Not for a week or two — lower the temperature a few degrees, check the chemistry, give the water a shock and leave the filtration running on its normal schedule. How much will a beginner’s chemistry mistake cost me?

Usually just time and a few euros extra: replacing spoiled water comes down to the water and sewage charges (roughly 4–6 € for 1,000 litres) plus rebalancing the chemistry. The consequences of long-term neglect are pricier — scale on the heater or biofilm in the pipework already mean a service call costing well over a hundred euros.

Can I tell whether the water is fine without testing it?

You can’t — crystal-clear water can have zero sanitiser or an extreme pH, and your skin will notice before your eyes do. A drop test kit or test strips cost around 10–20 € and a measurement takes a minute. It’s the cheapest insurance against most of the mistakes in this ranking.

Is chlorine or bromine better for a beginner?

Chlorine is simpler to start with: it’s cheaper, faster and easy to measure. You’ll appreciate bromine later — it’s more stable at high temperatures and gentler on the skin, but it requires a dispenser and a slightly different care regime. Whichever you choose, never combine the two in one dispenser.
